Avian Influenza Avian Influenza, also known as Bird Flu, is an acute infection of poultry caused by type A Influenza virus. The virus is highly contagious and fatal to birds, causing respiratory and peptic symptoms. In flocks where infection is seen, the death rate can be up to 100%. The Avian Influenza virus is sensitive to temperature (>70ºC), environmental conditions, low and high pH and drying. The virus remains viable for extended periods in tissues, faeces and water, especially in cold and humid environments. This virus can easily be inactivated and stabilized, however, using chemical disinfectants or ultraviolet light. Virus Transmission The virus is excreted from infected birds via faeces, nasal or ocular discharge, which then infects new birds via ingestion or contact with these fluids.  For this reason, the most important issue regarding infection control is hygiene.  By following strict hygiene routines and setting up biosecurity zones, you will minimise the risk of an Avian Influenza outbreak on your site.
